FIREFIGHTERS from Gwent spent 24 hours doing a charity relay ladder climb.

The team of 26 firefighters from New Inn, Cwmbran and Abersychan fire stations took over Tesco car park in Pontypool from 2pm on Wednesday until 2pm on Thursday.

Shaun Moody, one of the firefighters taking part, said they raised over £1,000 from donations on the day alone and are still collecting sponsorship money.

He said: "We were overwhelmed by the support we got from the community."

Every metre climbed by the firefighters represented one mile between Pontypool and Afghanistan and the team managed to cover the scale-version of the 4,022.99 mile journey.

The crews were raising money for Help for Heroes, the charity for soldiers who have been injured in service, as well as The Firefighters Charity, which helps firefighters and their families.

Ex-army Corporal Dean Howells of the Army Air Corps is now a firefighter at New Inn fire station and organised the event.

As well as bucket collections, a raffle was held and people could buy Help for Heroes merchandise.
