EXOTICALLY named teams of men and women in brightly coloured boats disturbed the peaceful waters of the River Wye to raise money for St David's Foundation Hospice Care.
The Dragon Boat Race at Monmouth Rowing Club has become a regular fundraising event with the emphasis on fun, and 17 teams took to the water yesterday, attracting more than 400 supporters and onlookers throughout a rain-interrupted day.
"There's not been as many here because of the weather, but everyone's had a great time," said foundation chief executive Emma Saysell, who was doing her bit for a cause by helping man the burger stall.
"We've had a good mix of corporate entries with the likes of pubs and private teams, and the rivalry has been friendly.
"It's one of a series of events we run every year because we are so reliant on the generosity of the people of Gwent, and of businesses that are prepared to sponsor or support us.
"We had to cancel last year because of the weather, so it's good to get the event on and we're thankful to everyone who has helped us."
NatWest, BAE Systems, and Harding Evans were among the corporate entries clashing oars with the likes of teams from Monmouth's Green Dragon pub, Monmouth School, and more lightheartedly-named entries such as Hot Scull Boating Crew, Cwmbran Chain Gang, and Reverend Dave and the Fish Takers.
