RESIDENTS in two Newport streets were leafleted asking them not to leave food out for pigeons.

Newport council had reports that people were feeding pigeons in Bailey Street and Caroline Street, in the Stow Hill area of Newport, and that this was causing a nuisance.

Letters and leaflets were sent to all householders explaining the problems caused by leaving food out for pigeons.

I wish the council would close all the drinking holes.
Humans also course a nuisance.
Please also stop these little shops selling drinks to kids these also course a problem.
Picking on the poor pigeons.
Open your eyes you stupid fools I would rather see birds than the mess human waste makes.
I feed the pigeons and will continue to feed them get a life .

I'm all for a pigeon cull. They are filthy animnals who's numbers should be kept in check.

It may be the end of the world if the rats that are attracted by the food that's left out for pigeons start invading your house. Think about it...

Can we also cull people who litter our streets and let their dogs roam free, fouling our pavements?

At least bird poo washes away. Chewing gum sticks to the pavement for years.

If we're talking about vermin, maybe we should concentrate on our own species first instead of waging a war against nature.

Mervyn James, says...

I'm all for eradicating these pigeons too, they are absolute vermin, and feeding them is adding to the problem.

In a more natural environment pigeons would not be a problem because natural predators would keep numbers down, however, people throwing food down for them has allowed them to breed where they otherwise would not. What we see around town is not 'natural' breeding, they are a product of our waste. (I agree with the public stocks too for the human variety who litter the place as well !).

Honest Harry, Newport says...

There is no doubt that pigeons are a nuisance, but first we have to educate the people who exacerbate the problem by feeding them. People who eat "on the hoof" are also to blame. They walk around ramming chips, sandwiches etc. down their throats and discard any unwanted food on the pavements and in the gutters. Educate this lot and the problem will take care of itself.

Now that's an idea worth exploring!!!
We could make it into a competitive sport too, imagine thge spectacle of "Lout Hunting", Newport would provide an excellant training ground for such a sport what with the abundance of targets we have.
It'd make shopping in Newport city centre alot more entertaining!!!!!

This isn't news, these leaflets went out weeks, maybe months, ago

A well-intentioned resident used to put breadcrumbs out for the pigeons in Caroline St, but this has stopped.

The pigeons can now be seen happily stuffing themselves with the grass seed that NCC's been putting down along Usk Way. Somebody ought to send them a leaflet.

Stupid! they spread disease, ruin buildings which need constant maintenance, they breed very rapidly, hence producing more little infested buggers! i do wish people would actually stop and think before putting digget to keyboard. It would make you look a lot less silly!

"Frequently, large numbers of pigeons are supported by well-intentioned individuals who regularly feed them bread, table scraps, or birdseed. From a modest beginning, the individual feeder encourages more and more birds to appear or stay in the area, thus requiring more feeding and further enhancing bird numbers. Eventually, the situation gets out of control, to the detriment of all concerned.

One of the keys to controlling pigeon populations around urban neighborhoods is to limit the amount of feeding by humans. In excessive feeding situations, the humane action is to gradually reduce feed—over a period of several weeks—to a reasonable baseline amount. Feed only as much as the birds will consume in five to ten minutes, and don't feed with the clockwork regularity that conditions the birds to appear at the same place, same time, every day—and attract more and more of their compatriots over time.

SHOOT THEM!!!

Enlighten me please. What disease do pigeons spread? Is it dangerous? Should we cross the road if we see one coming? What happens if one flies overhead? Where can we get advice. Is there treatment available or are the diseases incurable.

As daft as it sounds, I'm with Lisa34.

I cant help but feel sorry for these beautiful little birds... and the disfigured ones...

I am all for not feeding them, but deliberately being cruel towards any animal is beyond me.

Seagulls are just as beautiful!! Elegant, and clever birds....

I fear there are some wildlife supporters and animal lovers who would support wild lions running around the streets and eating people, it's only natural ! Germs from pigeons (and Dogs and Cats), can cause blindness in children too. I bet this lot would campaign for the rats to spread bubonic plague.... what IS it with these 'rights' people they will put human life second to vermin ? After YOU is what I say !!! feeding these vermin promotes an IMBLANCE in the natural order, they're not cuddly feathered friends, they spread dirt and disease and are a health hazard.

Mr Bump., Newport West says...
5:11pm Mon 30 Jun 08

As the person who first suggested a cull, may i point out that i am a nature lover. These birds aren't wild animals, they are feral. They are decended from rock doves. These creatures are almost man made. Kill the lot of them.

The_Master, says...

I'd rather have a cull on the other kind of Vermin.. As urinating, vomiting and bleeding also carry disease's.. Not to mention them bent over there dirty little bags of Street Drugs outside Escapade.. As they are the most feral and animal like..

Not to mention they throw there kebabs and Maccie D's on the floor feeding the winged vermin...

Should we also carry this argument to the birds in our gardens?do we stop putting out bird feeders? or are the cute robins tits finches etc so different. I am not in tne habit of feeding pigeons but from now on I`ll make a point of offering them some morsel - to think that some creatures are thriving because of our actions should be a reason to celebrate!Keep going pigeons! I`m on your side.

Duncan from CWMFELINFACH. I bet you are over run with the filthy things .

Maybe the argus should run a poll on a worthwhile subject such as this, rather than whether a footballer is worth so much, or how many gajmes of a football tournament we have watched.

Duncan I Lived in Cwmfelinfach,I didn't see many pigeons there ! It is one thing to put food out for local wild birds, we're talking filthy and germ-ridden vermin, which yer average Robin or skylark aren't. The LA should put a price on their heads, we'd soon see a drastic reduction of them. That's what they did with wild rabbits during the Miximatosis issue.

Having returned to the natural state is no reason to have anything destroyed, and having done so with great success increases my admiration of this fascinating bird.If we are talking filth, just observe what dogs leave behind, and our fellow beings(probably the worst of all).

What about starlings, they poop a lot more than pigeons and there are more of them, hanging around in gangs scavenging chips out of bins! Pecking little children's fingers for their ice cream! Think there's a bit of birdism going on here!

Mervyn James, says...

They are different pigeons ! not nurtured and trained racing pigeons let loose, just feral pigeons feeding on garbage and spreading it. I'll strike you a deal YOU live in Newport, I'll, go live in Cwmfelinfach, then you can play with as many of these disgusting birds as you want to. You don't have to live with the filth we get from them. They cause lung disease and all sorts, they AREN'T cute little pets...

I agree about dogs and many dirty people, I'd get rid of dogs roaming the street, and make the litter bugs who throw food on the floor clear up their own crap too. You would think with all the CCTV newport has trained on us day and night they could ID the culprits easy enough. All you need to do is set them up outside fast food areas, and the Newport LA could make a mint fining the offenders. Now that IS making decent use of CCTV

No deal thanks, I made my choice years ago and if I ever move it certainly would not be to Newport, but for reasons other than pigeons! Now I get a vision of Newport lined with row upon row of hospital beds full of people with lung disease feebly e-mailing their LA to do something. I suggest that before doomsday arrives that each person in Newport adopts a pigeon! take it home, train it, give it a name, give it a medal!
I fully agree with your comment on litter bugs, but I don`t recommend adopting one of those creatures.

Pigeons carry a range of diseases such as salmonellosis, tuberculosis and ornithosis. And there are no direct evidence that the diseases have been passed from pigeons to humans. <-- that's from a web site!

Do you not remember that they tried this cull before?..and i assume you don't remember also that the rat population increased ten-fold..now sorry, but i'd rather see a bird than a rat.

Where there are humans there will always be birds,it's just a fact of life that we have to deal with.
Many don't like them,personally i'm a live and let live person,they don't bother me so i don't bother them
Maybe if the council put more bins up then people would be more inclined to put rubbish in it!..i've had to walk for nearly 20mins before i came across a bin to dispose of my rubbish.
And don't get me started on dog poo!

Mervyn James, says...

For live and let live, read apathetic ? Why not cull dogs, who leave their disease-ridden calling card everywhere too ? Because people put dogs first ? I usually find the people that protest if ANYONE suggests fido is in the wrong, it's usually Fido's owner... who has gone up the pub and left Fido to cr*p everywhere.... Didn't there used to be dog wardens ? round them up, then fine their owners or impound the animals. I don't see how putting notices up on grass verges makes an iota of difference, until a dog learns to read (And it's owners !).
