CAERLEON’S National Roman Legion Museum unveiled its new Roman-inspired garden this week.
Bosses at the museum originally planned to develop the museum’s back yard into a Roman garden in 1988, but were unable to do so because of a lack of funds.
But last year, the museum was given £18,000 from Newport City Council and was finally able to get to work.
The garden was officially opened by president of the National Museum Wales, Paul Loveluck, at a special ceremony on Tuesday evening and staff dressed up in Roman costume to add to the atmosphere.
Assembly Member for Newport West, Rosemary Butler, Newport West MP Paul Flynn and Gwent's High Sheriff Judith Child also attended the ceremony.
Museum visitors were able to wander around the garden, which resembles a Roman millionaire's garden.
There are plenty of different herbs in the garden, which the Romans would have used as medicine.
