THE polls are now closed. See tomorrow's Argus to see who will be a star for the night.

On Saturday more than a hundred people turned up to cheer on the 10 selected soloists to sing at the live audition in Newport Market.

Organisers this year, Newport's city centre manager, Sarah Williams in conjunction with Argus Deputy News Editor Laura Evans and Gemma Greenman of Red Dragon were the judges and were left with the task of picking three to go through to the public vote.

The ten hopefuls - Rachel Ann Keyse, 23 from Newport; Sophie Harris, 16 from Sudbrook; Shelby Morgan, 14 from Newport; Amy Robins, 14 from Blaina; Becky Barnbrook, 17 from Newport; Matt Clements, 16 from Bassaleg; Emma Hughes, 23 from Risca; Clay Howell, 24 from Newport; Becki Nash, 18 from Cwmbran; Lauren Watkins, 15, from Malpas sang their hearts out in the battle for the final.

The standard of entries was extremely high and while the judges deliberated for 40 minutes, Abersychan band, Fret to Society kept the audience entertained.

Eventually their minds were made up and because of the amazing performances, the panel picked five finalists - Rachel Ann Keyse, Becky Barnbrook, Becki Nash, Shelby Morgan and Clay Howell.

The winner of the vote will not only get to perform at the Newport Christmas lights extravaganza on November 16, but will also get to switch on the lights with Newport Mayor Noel Trigg.
