Gwent Police launch high-tech war on thieves

VEHICLE thieves and shoplifters in Gwent are being targeted by police.

Extra officers are being used this week to capture cars and use specialist number plate recognition equipment to find stolen goods and return them to their rightful owners.

Detective Inspector Peter Jones, who is leading the operation, said this is a response to the increase in thefts from vehicles during the run-up to Christmas.

He said: "We know that thieves are stealing number plates, sat navs, audio equipment like CD players and mobile phones. We also know they are selling them on and are working with second hand shops to stop that."

People can register their valuables on the specially designed Immobilise.com website so their goods can be returned if stolen.

Officers from the community safety team will also be out in January showing shoppers how to register their valuables.

Inspector Terry Davies from the team said: " We are concerned that the credit crunch may be leading more people to risk buying dodgy goods which could have been stolen, to save money."

Detectives will be using capture cars, which are vehicles packed with goods inside them to attract thieves at key locations.

These vehicles are equipped with video cameras to record thieves breaking in and help to create a quick arrest.

Officers may also carry out raids on the homes or premises of suspects.

Nice Idea! But afraid to tell SWP it wont work. If anything you will just catch opportunists. Real thieves who have no respect for themselves or others would most likley sold there christmas haul already, so you might catch em on the day, but what will they get... ll tell you what they will get. They will have victims payin tax so that these criminals can get top lawyers to defend them so we pay for there defence... so yet again, the victim loses. I suggest every thief caught stealing out of other people property or cars, that the victim is allowed to go rummaging around there houses and cars and take what they want for the value of property they lost.. that would stop em!

it's the way the world has gone. Old bill spends our taxes catching the lag. Courts spend our taxes building up a case, legal aid spends our taxes to get them off. If prosecuted worse they get is community service or suspended sentence and are back lifting stuff out of Asda before you clock in for work. Police then need more money to catch them again and so the circle continues, the only winners appear to be the lag who is free and the people who are paid legal aid. The victim can go whistle and live in fear for all they care.
It's a shame because the ones who get the blame are the police....
