H. E. Bates’s classic novels The Darling Buds of May are being brought back to life at the Dolman Theatre in Newport this week.

The tales of a boisterous family who lived in the idyllic countryside were best known in the 1990s TV series featuring David Jason and a young Catherine Zeta Jones.

In this production by the Newport Playgoers Society, Simon Copley will play Pop, the wheeling and dealing breadwinner of the Larkin family, Rhian Mitchell will play Ma, Ros Jones-Griffiths will play daughter Mariette and twins Zinnia and Petunia will be played by Emma Radmilovic and Bethan Davies.

In this adaptation, Mariette falls for tax inspector Charlie (William G. Maddocks) when he comes to investigate Pop’s finances, and she tries to woo him with trips to Bluebell Wood. The play is directed by Bruno Cooke.

The Darling Buds of May will be performed from February 17 - 21 at 7.15pm and an extra matinee show will be performed on the Saturday at 2.30pm.
