Funding of £3.5 million was announced today to modernise 23 public libraries.
The money is part of a three-year programme to promote libraries and encourage more people to use them.
The Assembly Government said it would deliver a boost to the local economy by creating work for builders and suppliers.
Improvements will include study facilities, better access for disabled people, new children's areas and free wireless internet access at some libraries.
Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones said: "The people of Wales deserve a modern library network and we are well on our way to achieving our goal of modernising 20% of public libraries throughout Wales by 2011.
"It encourages me to know that we are reaching out to new audiences and attracting more people to enjoy the improved facilities and services of their local library.
"Libraries of all types in Wales provide excellent opportunities for people to improve their skills and develop their knowledge, therefore making them more competitive in the jobs market.’’
