Fans drive to Georgia to deliver football kit

A GROUP of football fans are setting of on a 3,500-mile charity drive to deliver football kits to children in Newport's twin city in Georgia.

Around 22 supporters from Wales Football Supporters charity Gol, will leave on Friday, complete with more than 150 football kits, including roughly 60 Newport County shirts and shorts, which were donated as part of an appeal.

Ten cars packed with football kits as well as training kit, books, toys and football memorabilia will make their way to Azerbaijan to coincide with Wales' World Cup qualifying match in Baku's Tofik Bakhramov Stadium on June 6.

On the way, the charity workers will stop in Frankfurt, Vienna, Budapest, Romania and Istanbul before crossing into Georgia, spending two nights in Kutaisi, Newport's twin city for 20 years.

They will visit a number of children's charities on the way, dropping off the equipment, with Exiles kit being kept for children in Kutaisi.

The FAW also agreed to fly over equipment which wouldn't fit in the cars.

Trustee at Gol, Tim Hartley, said: "The charity was bowled over by the generosity of the people of Newport, the twinning association, the Amber Army, supporters and the club itself."

Even the cars, which were all bought for £400 or less and sponsored, will be donated to good causes in Georgia, with the group flying back on June 8.
