A NEWPORT man was jailed after admitting threatening to shoot his brother during a “heated exchange.”

Karl Warren Cook, 42, of Riverside, appeared in Cardiff crown court for sentencing having previously admitted making threats to kill his brother, Lance Cook.

Prosecutor Saf Ibrahim told the court that Lance Cook received a call from his brother at about 2pm on March 17 saying he wanted to see him.

When Lance Cook arrived at his brother’s Riverside home, the defendant told him he had been told by a “good source” that someone had assaulted two female relatives.

Cook said he was going to “blow” the man away and warned Lance Cook he would be next.

The court heard Cook said: “I will blow you away. I’ll kill anyone who gets in my way.”

Lance Cook called the police and armed officers arrested the defendant.

Several firearms were recovered from the house, but Cook had licences for them all.

In interview, Cook admitted making the threats and told officers about the assault allegations.

Mr Ibrahim said Cook pleaded guilty on the basis that the defendant had believed the allegations about his family and thought his brother may know something about them.

He said the threats were made during a “heated exchange” when Cook was “emotional and upset” and Cook accepted his brother may have been frightened.

Although firearms were found in Cook’s home, no weapon was used in the incident.

Representing Cook, Sarah Waters said the situation had now “calmed down” and Cook has reconciled with his brother.

Judge Patrick Curran said: “There are right ways and wrong ways of dealing with the sort of provocative statement you heard. You took the wrong way.”

Cook was sentenced to four months in prison, but was released straight away as he has already served 63 days in custody.
