THE wild and beautiful landscape of the Brecon Beacons is a magnet for walkers and you can also sample the stunning vistas from a saddle.

What's more, you don't need any experience to enjoy a pony trek through some of Wales' most breath-taking scenery.

Llanthony Pony Trekking, run by Court Farm, in Llanthony, caters for the shaky beginner, right through to the experienced rider.

They offer you two different types of riding: pony treks (half-day or full-day) for beginners, or those wanting a less demanding ride, and 'hacks' for the more experienced. During a trek, riders find their own comfort level, but there is a chance to branch off and trot or canter in the right places. This option is also suitable for children (eight years and over - younger children need to be by arrangement), as well as adults.

Hacking is for small groups of more experienced riders who want to move faster, with more opportunities to canter.

This is the option for people who ride regularly and are confident on a horse. Fully trained guides are responsible for both types of ride. Trips go out in the morning and afternoon, and you can expect to be out for about two hours per session.

A full day will mean lunch at one of the local pubs, where food is cheap and cheerful, and where children are allowed.

As far is gear is concerned, you need heeled footwear (not trainers) and warm clothing. Hats are provided. There is a weight limit of 15 stone.

FACTFILE The season runs from the beginning of April to October, and sessions start at 10.00am or at 2.00pm. For more information call Court Farm on 01873 890359 or e-mail CourtFarm@Llanthony.co.uk
