IT is always dificult to gauge the atmosphere of a restaurant when you are the only customers.

Unfortunately, therefore, the night we visited the Eagle Inn and Restaurant in Broad Street, Ross-on-Wye, we were the only people there who wanted to enjoy a meal and not just have a drink.

The menu was quite interesting. I chose crispy breaded Brie with fruity cranberry dip to start and my partner opted for the country pat with chutney and toast, which arrived in the form of small slices of baguette.

My teenage daughter opted for a traditional prawn cocktail. I felt a little let down with what was on offer but my daughter's prawn cocktail was fine.

It is often difficult eating out with a young child but my four-year-old daughter was provided with a dish of penne pasta with tomato and basil sauce which she enjoyed.

The teenager had chargrilled chicken with crispy bacon, barbecue sauce and melted cheese.

My partner chose a 12oz sirloin steak with chips and salad garnish. He wasn't asked how he would like it cooked - it came well done.

I was presented with a reasonably sized piece of gammon and pineapple with chips and salad garnish. Both meals were fine.

Three soft drinks and a pint of beer brought the bill to £47.54. Kathy Jones
