NEWPORT County boss John Cornforth is urging his side to go for the jugular tonight in their Conference South basement battle with Red-bridge, where a win for County will relegate the hosts.

Cornforth has seen his side slip to within goal-difference of the bottom-three after a hugely disappointing 3-1 defeat at Welling at the weekend, and now knows that his side's season could hinge on tonight's visit to Redbridge, who are 12 points adrift of safety and effectively already down.

Both Maidenhead and Margate (the other teams below County) have already played 39 games, so a win tonight would take Newport clear of their rivals, ahead of a final game of the season showdown with Maidenhead.

But for now, Cornforth is only concerned with the next game - which means getting three points at Redbridge.

He said: "This is the biggest, most important game of the season after we came back down to earth with a bump at the weekend.

"As good as we have been in recent weeks, we were equally bad on Saturday and I have done a lot of soul searching over the weekend.

"We did not string two passes together on Saturday and defended terribly all over the park, conceding schoolboy goals and making mistakes.

"It was a complete horror show, but the position we are in, you need to bounce back quickly and that is what we'll be looking to do tonight.

"Redbridge are struggling, but Welling, with all due respect, are not a good side and they made us look inept. "So it is not beyond Redbridge to get a win tonight, especially as if they lose they are down, but we have to be confident and ruthless and must hurt them to help ourselves.

"We are creating more chances now and are scoring some lovely goals, but we need to tighten up at the back very quickly and we may change a thing or two in that area.

"We took great support with us to Welling and no doubt the fans will turn out again at Redbridge, so we need to put on a display and pick up the points for them, we owe them one."
