A CWMBRAN ceramics business is about to take a leap into the big time with a move to a high-profile site offering 20,000 sq ft of space.

From March 2005 Tiles Ahead will be based at a large unit on Ty Coch Way, opposite the Territorial Army base.

Managing director Nick McDonald is attempting to create a ceramics, marbles and bathrooms centre of excellence to attract trade and retail customers from across South Wales.

A 400,000 refitting operation is being undertaken by Aspen Construction, of Mam-hilad, to create a ground- and mezzanine-level showroom fronting a large warehouse.

The showroom will include a giant water feature to add atmosphere and show how mosaics can be used more creatively.

Mr McDonald said: "We outgrew our existing premises years ago but it has been very difficult to find the right site to move to.

"But when Torfaen council's economic development unit let us know that this site had become available we knew it was right for us. It's easy to find, has plenty of parking and is close to the motorway network.

"We've actually had fantastic support from the council to secure the unit and gain the change of use required in the planning consent."

For the last 12 years Tiles Ahead has been crammed into 3,000 sq ft across two units on Court Road industrial estate. Turnover has built up to around 1.2 million per year, and the workforce has risen to 12 people.

The expansion in March will create an additional eight jobs, and Mr McDonald is hoping for an immediate 25 per cent uplift in turnover.

He said: "Last year 65 million square metres of tiles were used in Britain, and demand is forecast to grow to 85 million square metres by 2010."

He attributes this trend to British people growing to love all things Mediterranean and beginning to embrace the idea of fully tiled floor areas, instead of fitted carpets.

He also believes that changes in home design have opened up the market.

"Years ago homes were draughty, but improved heating - especially underfloor systems - and better insulation mean that people can now enjoy the beauty of ceramics without sacrificing comfort."

Nevertheless the ramp-up in Tiles Ahead's business requires a cool head.
