ANDREW Davies is almost certainly out of Glamorgan's Twenty20 Cup finals day at Edgbaston at the weekend, opening the way for both Gwent duo Mike Powell and Ian Thomas to be included.

Glamorgan's one-day specialist bowler has suffered a tear to a hip muscle while playing league cricket for Sully on Saturday.

Davies's injury is a blow ahead of Saturday's semi-final against Leicestershire, especially after losing Dean Cosker for the rest of the season with a broken finger.

But it would ease selection headaches for captain Robert Croft and coach John Derrick. Selection would almost be academic if Alex Wharf, also suffering from a hip injury, does not pass a fitness test at Taunton on Friday.

Glamorgan, who have Michael Kasprowicz available for his first taste of Twenty20 cricket this season, look certain to go to Edgbaston without Davies as they look at the bigger picture.

"It's not just about Saturday as far as Andrew is concerned. We have got six games in the totesport League and we want him to play as much a part as that as possible,'' said Derrick.

"Michael Kasprowicz is available for the next two games and we will need Andrew for the last two months of the season.

"If Andrew is out we could play David Harrison, or we could play the extra batsman. It's a hard selection but it something we will look at later in the week.''

But it does open the way for Powell to be re-selected. He was left out for the quarter-final to make room for Matthew Elliott.

With Ian Thomas having scored an unbeaten 116 against Somerset at Taunton he was too valuable at the time to overlook.

Glamorgan travel up from Taunton to Birmingham on Friday night with their semi-final beginning at 3pm.

Though England have made Simon Jones available for the Twenty20 Cup finals, Glamorgan have insisted he is not part of their short-form plans.
