LEGENDARY actor and director Lord Attenborough, left, is lending his support to the Newbridge Memorial Hall's bid for a £3 million makeover in the grand final of the BBC Restoration programme.

Last week the building won the Welsh heat of the popular BBC 2 programme - backed by the Argus - and will compete in the final at 8pm on Sunday.

He said: "For me, any single building that combines the proud self-sufficiency of a Welsh mining community with a gorgeous but dilapidated art-deco cinema and a lasting tribute to the heroes of the First World War is a compelling cause indeed.

"The hall is not some crumbling monument to the wealth and privilege of a by-gone era. Its very existence proves that ordinary people can become truly extra-ordinary through vision, generosity and determination

"The same community with the same sense of civic pride that brought it into being is trying desperately to save this handsome building today. They certainly have my support."
