RED Dragon FM has maintained its number one position in the Gwent and Glamorgan transmission area, according to the radio industry's latest official listening figures.

The station has 35% of the population tuning into its schedule each week. Owned by the Capital Radio Group, and broadcasting from Atlantic Wharf in Cardiff Bay, Red Dragon is reaching 318,000 listeners, 17,000 more than this time last year.

Radio 2 came second in the area with 252,000 listeners (28 per cent) and Real Radio third with 238,000 (26 per cent).

BBC Radio Wales recorded 195,000 listeners (22 per cent) and Radio 4 146,000 (16 per cent). Red Dragon's Jase & Zoe's Breakfast Show is the favourite morning entertainment with 205,000 tuning in.

Red Dragon marketing controller, Eirwen Parker said: "We're obviously delighted with the station's performance.

"Jase & Zoe continue to be a winning morning combination, Leigh Jones is doing fantastically in the drive time slot, and our Hit 40 UK show on Sunday afternoons has 50% more listeners than any other station."

Nationally, Radio 2 was a big winner, with overall listening figures reaching 13.5 million.

Terry Wogan is still the most popular breakfast time host, with an audience of eight million.
