HUNDREDS of people are expected to attend Monmouthshire's Seafood Fair in September.

More than 200 visitors attended the event organised by Richard Gafney, of Vin Sullivan, Abergavenny, and former Walnut Tree chef Simon Kealy last year.

The sixth annual event will be held at Llansantffraed Court Country Hotel on Sunday, September 12, at noon.

Richard Gaffney said: "It's a fun event where everyone can enjoy themselves and taste first-hand some of the best seafood out there."

Wales' number one oyster-opener will be crowned at the event.

Judges at this year's event include newspaper food critic Colin Pressdee and Simon Wright from the AA Food Guide.

It will be their task to decide who has cleanly cut and opened their 30 oysters in the fastest time.

Last year's winner was Vin Sullivan fishmonger John Jenkins. This year's winner will be awarded a cheque for £200 and get the chance of representing Wales in the World Championships in Galway, Ireland.

Mr Gafney says oysters are an acquired taste. "You have to persevere, the best way is to swallow them whole."

Tickets for guests cost £25 and include an oyster and champagne reception followed by a three-course lunch, live entertainment and raffles with a free oyster bar. Tickets are available from Vin Sullivan.
