THERE'S no better way to get out and see the beautiful Welsh countryside this summer than on horseback.

FreeRein trails, based in Hereford, offer riders the chance to explore over 600 miles of mountains and moorlands in beautiful mid-Wales.

From a six-day trail through the Radnor Forest to a two-day exploration of the Wye Valley, FreeRein provide the world's most extensive trail riding network.

Most trails are designed for riders who are already able to groom and tack-up horses and are comfortable to trot or canter but there are special beginners trails too.

Families are also catered for, with many of the trails suitable for children over nine as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

For experienced riders Trans Wales Trails, based in Brecon, offer the chance to travel the whole length and breadth of Wales cowboy-style.

From the English border to the Irish Sea in just six days, the trail passes through four mountain ranges - the Black Mountains, Mynydd Eppynt, Elan Valley and Plynlimon - before a final gallop on the beach at Aberystwyth.

Riding traditional Welsh Cobs, the route offers a real challenge to experienced riders.

Covering forgotten bridleways, moorland crossings and private land and at the same time revealing some of the most breathtaking scenery in the UK.

With regular mountain-top picnics and cosy village pub dinners to re-charge the batteries, the trail is an ideal break for horse and countryside lovers.

Paul Turner, of Trans Wales Trails, said: "Here you are able to experience total enjoyment from the horse-rider partnership.

"We are sure that you will feel truly refreshed after just a couple of days away."
