If you're tired of the look of your home but really don't want to embark on a major project then take a look at soft furnishings. A small change can make a really big difference as Pip Larkham finds out

WHEN planning to give a fresh look to your home, the first thing you will need to establish is the sort of mood you wish to create.

Do you, for example, prefer a warm, cosy and slightly cluttered ambience?

Or would you feel more at ease with cool, elegant lines and unfussy decor?

If you're still finding it hard to decide, think about the sort of setting in which you will feel comfortable and relaxed; then consider the options...

The key is to be bold and big with your ideas.

Huge, dark coloured leather sofas can look stunning alongside sculptures, elaborate candles and towering plants.

A chaise longue is a more elaborate alternative to the average settee and, accompanied by a low matching foot stool and plenty of cushions, it can also be extremely comfortable.

Cushions covers needn't be plain either.

However, avoid large or bright patterns in favour of short tasselled fringing or soft fabrics such as velvet.

If you fancy a more summery feel to your home, you'll find that lots of wood - especially pine - will do the trick.

Wooden furniture is normally associated with the kitchen, but try sprucing up your bathroom in the same way or even transferring this fresh, spring-like look to the bedroom or lounge.

Modern wicker furniture is more practical than the rickety, uncomfortable stuff of old.

You can buy just about anything from wicker chairs and tables to wicker cupboards.

To give wicker depth and colour, cushions and throws in deep colours can be added.

However, don't think that everything must match.

Why not choose different colour cushions for each of your chairs or, if you still fancy having the typical three-piece suite in your lounge, opt for different colour chairs.

As long as the design is still the same, it will add a bit of contrast to your room.

Glass coffee tables are also a nice touch if you're looking for a bright, summery feel to your room.

Various shades of tinted glass are available in many stores, but it might also be a good idea to have one or two wicker mats or cork coasters on the table to help prevent scratches to the table top from bottles, cans, cups and cutlery.

Comfort is a number one consideration for most households when it comes to the living room, so how about a few scatter cushions. And if the grandchildren are often in situ why not provide them with bean bags.

However, cushions aren't the only way to ensure comfort.

The 'director's' chair is perfect for sitting up comfortably, and ideal in the bedroom (as a desk chair), in the kitchen or on the patio for those sunny days.

The fact that it's collapsible means it's easy to move around the house too.

Chairs that stack well and tables that fold away are other ideal options for the garden and the kitchen.

However you choose to furnish your home, make sure the style reflects your needs and makes you feel comfortable.

Remember - there's nothing stylish about feeling awkward in your own home!
