FLOWER beds, tubs, a school's garden of reflection and, of course, Newport's famous topiary pandas were all scrutinised by national judges yesterday.

Adjudicators Clive Adison and David Toyne, representing both Britain in Bloom and Wales in Bloom, were given a whistle-stop tour taking in schools, gardens, shops and parks.

The four-hour route devised by the Newport in Bloom (NIB) committee was designed to show off the best parts of the city where community efforts had contributed to a more colourful profile.

NIB chairman Alan Williams explained that every year the volunteer organisation receives a grant from the council to promote a greener environment.

Steve Davison, head of environmental services for Newport council, said he was proud of the efforts made by NIB and the population as a whole. Although, he admitted, while any accolade would be welcomed, it was a secondary priority when it came to reasons to brighten up the city. "I hope we do well, and there is every reason to believe we should," he said.

"But I would rather not win and know that Newport is looking at its best, than win if that isn't the case.

"I think if people live in a clean, tidy and beautiful environment there is reason to believe this is going to have a positive effect on health and well-being."

After a mayoral reception at Newport's civic centre, the two judges were taken to the city centre by countryside services manager Dave Morris and members of the NIB committee.

The only near-hitch of the day was when the old Garden Festival Clock in John Frost Square didn't show off its imaginative display on the stroke of the hour - but three minutes later, and in the nick of time, it whirled into action.

The tour continued by minibus to visit Chapel Park, Park Square, Tredegar House, St Woolos School, High Cross Primary, Belle View Park, St Julian's allotments, Pant y Celyn Court and the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre, viewing plenty of floral roundabouts along the way.

The judges were impressed and praised the efforts of the community. Newport will find out how it has performed later this year.
