Newport Wasps' reserve Karl Mason doesn't expect to be out of action for too long following his first heat spill in the GMB Mavericks meeting with Boston at the Hayley Stadium on Sunday.

The 18-year-old came a sharp cropper when a chain snapped on his machine, throwing him swiftly and painfully on to the track, damaging his left knee. Mason, who has just finished his studies and awaiting the results of his exams, said: "It was just one of those accidents you cannot avoid and this time it was not my fault.

"I don't know the extent of the damage, but the knee is purple and swollen and bruised but I can put more weight on it than when I suffered an ankle injury earlier in the seasons. I can put my whole body weight on it, although it is twice the size of the other knee."

However, it is unlikely that Mason will have recovered in time to make this weekend's double header meeting, Wasps taking on Workington in the Premier League and looking for a fourth straight home win with Buxton Hitmen providing the opposition for the Mavericks whose resources were severely stretched against the powerful Boston team.

Mavericks, missing skipper Scott Pegler, lost by a 40-point margin to Boston who are chasing the Conference League title.
