THERE are only two days left to register to take part in the biggest Sparkle event of the year so far.

On Sunday hundreds of people are expected to enjoy the exercise and fresh air as they walk the six miles from Fourteen Locks, Newport, to Cwmbran Stadium to help make special children shine.

The sponsored walk will raise money for a new children's centre to be built at High Cross.

People have until Friday afternoon to register to take part in the biggest fundraising event of the year so far.

Last December we launched our Sparkle Appeal with the aim of raising £250,000 towards the centre which will help 1,200 disabled children in Newport, Torfaen and south Monmouthshire. More than £50,000 has been raised so far.

The walk, with meeting points along the way, is for people of any age and ability.

Matthew Veater, Newport Rugby player, will join walkers along the way as he takes part and celebrates his 28th birthday.

He encouraged more people to register and take part this weekend in raising money for such a worthy cause.

He said: "I will be walking on the day to help out because it is a worthwhile charity and needs all the support it can get.

"If we can help to drum up some support then all the better." The father of two said that he would encourage people to take part in the walk and help raise funds for the new children's centre.

Olympic athletes Jamie Baulch and Colin Jackson have also pledged their support to the walk.

It is free to register and there is no minimum amount to be raised. People can make a donation themselves or collect sponsors.

The course is six miles but people can also join at Bettws Lane, Pentre Lane or at Cwmbran Stadium to do a final lap.
