A GWENT police officer was given a two year conditional discharge after pleading guilty to common assault on a 14-year-old girl.

Michael Anthony Thomas, aged 27, of Church Road, Risca, who was based at Bargoed police station at the time, committed the offence between the beginning of October and the end of November last year.

Newport crown court heard that Thomas grabbed the girl as she walked up the steps in front of him but caused her no injury. Not guilty verdicts were recorded for four counts of indecent assault against the 14-year-old and another teenager.

Judge Phillip Richards told Thomas to "be careful in the way in which you interact with young girls in the future".

Thomas was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £50 within seven days.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: "We accept the finding of the court and PC Michael Thomas has resigned with immediate effect."
