MOTORISTS are being warned they will be caught as a summer drink drive campaign gets underway in Gwent today.
Figures for Wales show a higher percentage of drivers are found over the limit in the summer months than during the Christmas period.
Gwent Police and the other three Welsh constabularies have joined forces for the All Wales Summer Drink Drive Campaign that will run until July 20.
Inspector Fran Richley, of Gwent Police traffic department, said: "The best advice is to avoid drinking at all when driving. There are permitted limits but that does not make it advisable.
"The only way to be sure is to not drink at all. We have a bigger problem with drink driving in the summer with people going out for barbecues and enjoying the weather in beer gardens."
In the summer campaign last year 3,085 breath tests were administered across Wales of which 222 were positive (7.2 per cent).
During the Christmas campaign last winter 279 of the 5,824 tests were positive (4.8 per cent).
