A GANG of arsonists is bringing terror to three communities in a shocking spate of attacks, police revealed today.

And they warn that someone will be killed if the fires in the Abertillery area do not stop soon.

In the past week six cars have been torched in and around Llanhilleth, Cwmtillery and Six Bells.

This brings the total to 12 cars destroyed in less than a month, causing Gwent police and the South Wales Fire Service great concern.

In the latest incident, a white Renault parked near the Tillery Food factory was set alight at around 1am on Tuesday.

The driver and the passenger of a white Volkswagen Golf seen acting suspiciously in the area just before the blaze started are wanted in connection with the incident.

A small group of arsonists are believed to be responsible.

Sub officer David Gilson, of Abertillery fire station, said: "We have had a problem with car fires in general over the past few weeks but people have also been targeting caravans in back lanes and rubbish such as old carpets left in backgardens.

"With fires like this, especially in the dry conditions we have been experiencing, there is always the possibility of it spreading to a dwelling.

"Our message would be for people to be vigilant and to get their gardens cleared up because the small minority responsible for the fires are targeting them."

PC Paul Whittaker, crime and disorder reduction officer for Abertillery police station, said: "These incidents are a cause for concern because this could go too far.

"Although the damage has been minor so far there is always the chance the fire could get out of control or the perpetrators could start setting fire to property and that could lead to loss of life.

"We are aware of this problem and we would appreciate anyone with information contacting us on 01495 212021."
