FEELING hot, hot, hot... well, make the most of it, because the two-day heatwave looks set to end.

With temperatures hitting 27 degrees Celsius over the past couple of days supermarkets have seen an increase in ice- cube and ice-cream sales.

And while people across Gwent have been finding ways to keep cool, spare a thought for workers at the Belle Vue Nurseries in Newport. Temperatures rose to over 100 degrees while the gardeners put the finishing touches to the flowers that will make up some of the city's summer floral displays.

At the other end of the scale, lucky staff at Vin Sullivan foods cooled off in temperatures that barely rose above freezing.

John Sullivan, managing director, said: "It is absolutely lovely on days like this. Although we have the windows open in the office it is quite a relief going into the cold room on warm days."

He said it was a pleasant environment to work in but there was always concern for the freezers and chillers with the amount of work they have to do in the heat.

Asda in Newport saw sales of ice-cream rise by 50 per cent in the last few days.

Catherine Cox, Asda employee, said: "Sales of products like burgers and chicken portions have also been up, by 40 per cent, with people having barbecues."

Asda are also continuing the pet-stop areas with extra water, and giving sun block to employees working outside in the heat.
