SIR Terry Matthews has vowed to attract the biggest names in world golf to the Celtic Manor, as well as a World Championship event.

The resort, which stages the Wales Open, is to have its Wentwood Hills course modified to host the Ryder Cup, which is expected to attract 50,000 people each day.

But before that, ambitious billionaire Matthews plans to bring the likes of world number one Tiger Woods to Newport and he said: "You have to do what you have to do to raise the profile of the event.

"As each year goes by we crank it up.

"My objective is to be the crown jewel of the tour's events and I will keep at it."

The Celtic Manor's best chance of hosting one of the World Golf Championship events would seem to be the American Express Championship, which this year is being held for the second time at Mount Juliet, in Ireland, and has also been staged twice at Valderrama.

"Our ideal would be to host it in 2008 when American players who might be in the Ryder Cup in 2010 could come over and play," said Matthews.

Matthews has also promised dramatic changes in golf technology will be pioneered in Newport in time for the 2010 Ryder Cup.

The 61-year-old, who celebrated his birthday on the 18th green on the final day at the Wales Open, plans to take advantage of broadband technology for the Ryder Cup, building upon existing mobile phone advances.

He is 100% certain that current photo phones will soon be trumped by phones with video camera capabilities and is set to use this technology at the Ryder Cup.

In theory, each hole on the course would have mobile camera vantage points and each player would be tagged with a small camera and information panel. The tag would allow internet users to download information such as ball yardage and club selection for each player and also follow their individual progress.

Sir Terry already has his technicians working on the ambitious plans and is confident that they can be implemented in time for 2010.
