ONE of Europe's largest independent manufacturers of ground support equipment for civil and military aircraft is flying high - after investing in new vehicles from across the entire Mercedes-Benz truck and van range.

Aircraft Maintenance Support Services of Bridgend, South Wales, manufactures everything from self-propelled baggage conveyors and mobile passenger steps to weapons handlers and heavy-duty loaders for military aircraft. The company is a long-standing Mercedes-Benz operator, having been a loyal customer of local dealer Euro Commercials for more than two decades.

Latest additions to its truck fleet are a 4x2 Actros Executive tractor unit with top-of-the-range, flat-floored and air-conditioned MegaSpace cab, and a 7.5-tonne Atego with day cab and air suspension.

Both are used to deliver the company's products to airports and military establishments - the rigid, which has a special, slide-back body, works mainly in the UK, but the tractor spends much of its time on Continental runs, hauling a step-frame trailer. Aircraft Maintenance Support Services has also bought two new Mercedes vans, both of which are kitted out as mobile workshops. They are new-generation Vito 115CDI with 2.77-tonne gross weight and a 2.8-tonne Sprinter 213CDI.
