RESIDENTS have made more than 50 calls to police about drug dealing in their neighbourhoods since the launch of the Rat on a Rat campaign.

The high-profile initiative seeks to drive drug dealers from Gwent streets by encouraging people to phone Crimestoppers with information.

Detective Chief Inspector Adrian Erasmus said: "We are delighted with the response so far.

"It is already a known fact that police officers in Gwent detect more crimes per officer than any other force in the country.

"This is undoubtedly attributable to the strong support we get from the public of Gwent.

"Drugs destroy lives and communities but with the help of the people who live in those communities Rat on a Rat is rooting out the dealers responsible to make the towns of Gwent a safer place to live."

He urged people to come forward with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem.

The Rat on a Rat campaign was launched on May 10 and by the end of last week 51 calls came through to Crimestoppers in confidence.

Before the Gwent Police initiative was launched, the Argus had already passed on 32 addresses and 27 names to police as part of our Shop a Dealer campaign.

Meanwhile, Gwent Police are warning that the strength of controlled drugs available in the county has increased.

DC Lyn Webber, drugs education officer at police headquarters, said: "Heroin is still the most used powder drug. The current purity could have fatal consequences for users who inject intravenously."

Police are urging anyone with information to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or Gwent Police on 01633 838111. Alternatively readers can contact the Argus news desk on 01633 777226 or 01633 777219.
