YOUNGSTERS throwing stones at passing cars from railway bridges could end in tragedy, police warn.

Officers say they are receiving numerous calls from concerned motorists, who say they have had stones thrown at their cars as they pass railway bridges in Risca and Crosskeys.

Groups of youngsters have been seen hurling stones from the railway bridge on Mill Street, in Risca, on two occasions. Police also received reports of stones being thrown at motorists from the railway bridge on Crosskeys 'corner'.

Police Constable Andy Harris, crime and disorder reduction officer for Risca police station said: "Unfortunately, this seems to be the latest fad for some kids. Apart from the damage to vehicles, they could easily cause an accident where someone could be seriously hurt or even worse.

"There is also the danger of the kids being killed from going on railway lines that are still in use."

The news follows a report in last Saturday's Argus which revealed how some Newport taxi drivers are refusing to go to certain parts of the city because of a spate of stone attacks by youths.

One independent cabbie, John Wells, 56, was hit on the head by a stone thrown through his window as he drove through Alway.

Last week we reported that stone-throwing has cost Newport Transport bus company £15,000 in the past month.

Newport taxi company, Dragon, said some drivers endure stone attacks on a nightly basis in some parts of the city.

Risca councillor Betty Toomer said: "I can only condemn such incidents because what could result from it is a tragedy. Youngsters need to realise the damage they can cause from such actions.

"Unfortunately they tend to respond to the excitement of the situation, but if a member of their own family was to get hurt they would realise how serious it is."

If anyone has information they should call Risca police on 01633 612391.
