Cwmbran Town....1 Port Talbot.............1

Skipper Sean Wharton snatched a late point at a rain-soaked Cwmbran Stadium last night when the home side stretched their unbeaten run to three matches.

But the Gwent side could quite easily have been beaten if Port Talbot substitute Alyn Jones had not wasted a glorious last minute chance.

Jones was through on goal but blasted a shot high and wide much to the relief of Cwmbran's players and fans.

Cwmbran started by welcoming back Wharton after he passed a fitness test, Ellacott and defender Richard Carter, all of whom missed last Saturday's 3-1 home Welsh Cup win over Cwmamman United.

However, it was Port Talbot, including former Crows Gary Wager, Russell Wigley and Lee Matthews in their line-up, who settled the matter.

Within the first six minutes, Ellacott had to save from Mark Dodds, Leone Jeanne and Rob Folland before Cwmbran striker Chris Summers struck a rising shot just over the bar.

Dodds again went close when his eight yard shot hit defender Gareth Warton standing near the line with Summers only able to toe-poke the ball past the far post when well placed.

But it was the visitors who took a deserved lead on 31 minutes when midfielder Wayne Savage headed in a Jeanne corner at the near post.

Cwmbran began the second period in determined fashion but saw midfielder Adam Moore head over at the far post from a Sean Mainwaring cross.

Heavy rain made underfoot conditions difficult and a whole series of misplaced passes saw the game become increasingly scrappy.

And as the half progressed, it became extremely difficult to see just what pattern of play Cwmbran were supposed to be adhering to.

Such was their frustration that they soon replaced Anthony Wright, Moore and Mark Gunn with Jody Jenkins, Chris Watkins and Mattie Davies.

But it was Port Talbot who came close to scoring again when Ellacott made a fine save to deny Savage.

Cwmbran though grabbed their late goal when Wharton lashed home a loose ball following a right wing cross from Watkins.
