THE search goes on for a bone marrow donor for seven-month-old Jack Witchard - and a Gwent club is now holding a fundraising evening for a charity that has joined the quest.

Jack, from Rogerstone, (pictured with mum Paula) has the rare condition Langer-hans Cell Hitiocytosis (LCH) and requires a transplant to boost his survival chances.

The Anthony Nolan Trust, which seeks to save the lives of adults and children who suffer from leukaemia and related diseases, is planning to hold sessions in Gwent where people can be tested to see if their bone marrow is a match for Jack's.

Ty Sign Social Club at Risca is planning a fundraising night for the charity on Thursday. "We're very grateful to everyone who is getting involved with the night, for example the cabaret duo Cherry J and Andy's Discos, who are giving their services for free," said Jack's grandmother Jenny Powell.

"Anything that can be done to help widen the search for a donor is important. The trust has kindly got involved, but these tests cost money, so anything we can raise on the night will help them out."

Every day that Jack is well is a bonus to his family, but the quicker a bone marrow match can be found, the better. Deficiencies in his immune system may leave him open to illness which could kill him.

"It's a matter of trying to keep him as well as we can at the moment," said Mrs Powell, customer services manager at Asda in Duffryn, Newport.

"He's been back to hospital for a bone marrow test to find out the latest state of his disease and we are just keeping our fingers crossed that something turns up for him."

The doors open for the Ty Sign Social Club event at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £3 and are available from Mrs Powell on 01633 613739, or at Asda on 01633 815571. They will also be available on the door.
