WHETHER you want to brush up your technique before heading to the real thing or try something new Pontypool's Ski Centre is the piste to be.

The artificial slope at Pontypool leisure centre's offers high level winter sport excitement whatever the weather.

Even experienced competitors rate the facility and it regularly plays host to international skiing competitions.

Over the summer Wales took on teams from England, Ireland and Scotland in a two-day slalom event and the Welsh team train there every Saturday afternoon throughout the winter.

Welsh skier Jamie Page, 19, said: "Pontypool is a really great hill, it's a good length and has a decent sprinkler system which keeps the surface fast. It provides a really challenging and fun race.

"Skiing on artificial slopes like this one is a great sport to be involved in, it's fast and challenging. People always think that skiing is expensive but it certainly doesn't have to be at first. Centres like Pontypool offer beginner and junior rates and you don't need your own equipment, you can hire it pretty cheaply. I have been racing for about five years and I love the speed and competition. I travel all over the place to ski and I love being in the mountains. These centres keep us sharp and are a good starting place for learners."

Rhys Evans, 18, who also skis for Wales, said: "I have been skiing for ten years and I love the sport. It gets you fit and it's a lot of fun especially for younger people. Everyone should give it a try at facilities like this one."

One person who's proud of Welsh skiing is Robin Kellen who runs Snowsport Wales. The organisation represents the Welsh team and promotes skiing in the principality.

Robin said: "After a few years out in the cold in alpine terms, the Welsh ski team have now established a programme with financial help from the Sports Council for Wales. Over the past few years we have gained some great results with a few of our skiers gaining selection for the British youth team. There are loads of opportunities for beginners to get involved. Centres like here at Pontypool offer tasters and good coaching."

In the new year skiers will have the opportunity to try out the latest skis and snowboards at a special test session.
