OUTSIDE half Jason Williams helped mastermind Newbridge's impressive victory over Tredegar when the odds seemed stacked heavily against them.

The Welfare Ground men incredibly were reduced to 13 men after just 11 minutes of play as full back Huw Lock was sin-binned for an undisciplined response to a shirt pulling offence and he was quickly followed by centre Shane Webley (high tackle) who was shown the red card.

Referee Huw Watkins also sin-binned Tredegar centre David Davies with Lock and the visitors' scrum half Shane Pinch before Newbridge flanker Martin Ackerman was sin-binned in the 23rd and 46th minutes respectively.

It was time for a cool head to take control and Williams produced one of his best displays in a successful Newbridge career. He kicked for position superbly, helped to set up one of his team's five tries, marshalled the hard-working home defence effectively and landed a penalty and two conversions.

Hooker Leighton Davies and second row Michael Peard were also towers of strength and they thoroughly deserved their first half touchdowns which gave Newbridge a deserved 12-0 interval lead.

Replacement wing Gareth Turner, centre and skipper Andrew Green and No 8 Matthew Griffin also crossed for tries in the second period with Turner's being the best of the night after a rousing break by Neil McKim two minutes after the restart.

Tredegar simply could not take advantage of their numerical superiority in the set pieces and they then contrived to throw away a string of scoring opportunities by bad handling and passing.

Centre Neil Lewis eventually managed to break down the stubborn home defence by crossing for a 68th minute try, converted by Jeremy Lloyd.

Outside half Richard Tibbs had opened their account with a short range penalty seven minutes after the restart.

Tredegar team manager Paul Woods said after the match: "We were very poor in some aspects of our play and we will have to work really hard from now on if we are to climb away from the foot of Division One.

"We always knew it was going to be tough in this league and it is proving to be just that. But we have got to keep our heads up and regroup to face another tough challenge when we entertain Blackwood at home on Saturday."

The Newbridge camp were pleased with the win but they were definitely unhappy that yet another of their players had been shown the red card this term.
