POLICE must wait another week before finding out how the baby found by a Gwent canal died.

The baby boy's body was found in a green holdall beside the Monmouthshire Brecon canal on October 11 - and despite appeals from detectives, the infant's mother has yet to come forward.

The new born baby weighed just five and a half pounds. A post mortem examination proved inconclusive and the result of further forensic tests were due yesterday but have now been delayed for another week.

Tests have so far indicated that the baby has been dead for about five weeks. Last Friday, Detective Inspector Rhiannon Hodges made an emotional appeal to the baby's mother to contact officers.

She said: "The pain you are experiencing won't go away on its own. You will probably feel like this for the rest of your life."

Anyone with information should call 01633 838111.
