THE Gwent boxing hall in which world champion Joe Calzaghe began his career was demolished this morning.
The old tin sheet building, near Newbridge Rugby Club, was torn down after Caerphilly council officers warned it was no longer safe.
The premises was already secured from the public and water and electricity supplies disconnected in readiness for today's demolition.
Owner and trainer Enzo Calzaghe - Joe's father - will set up a new gym at premises in Cwmcarn.
He said: "It's sad because you think of years of history taken down in one day with a bulldozer. It should be more of a shrine down there."
A spokesman for the council said: "The demolition crew were on site very early this morning.
"By about 8.30am there was nothhing left." The Calzaghe family are from Newbridge, but Joe now lives in Cwmbran with his wife and three children.
