GARETH CULL (pictured) could have been chasing the Welsh-Scottish League title with Newport this season but is more than happy to be where he is with Ebbw Vale.

The full-back has rattled up a hatful of points with The Steelmen during the campaign, helping them clinch places in the Principality Cup semi-final and the Parker Pen Shield quarter-finals as well as taking the notable scalps of some of Welsh rugby's richer clubs along the way.

Now he hopes to extend his tally, which is over the 300 mark, even further as Scottish side Glasgow visit Eugene Cross Park tomorrow.

Cull left Rodney Parade two seasons ago just at the start of the Black and Ambers revolution.

It was a twist of fate at Newport that led Cull to Vale via Bridgend - and he hasn't looked back since.

Cull said: "I played 12 games on the bounce at Newport and it was a bit of a surprise when I left.

"I was at full-back and Shane Howarth decided he wanted to play there. I left to join Bridgend but, shortly afterwards, Shane went back to outside half.

"I still could have been there now if you think of it but I don't regret the decision at all. "Bridgend is my home town club and I thought it was a move that would be good for me ,but it didn't go that well."

That was when he tried his luck back in Gwent and he has shone ever since. Cull added: "I've been enjoying it here. Last year I didn't have that much chance to play regular rugby. Now I have, my confidence has got better and better. It's just happened through playing games."

The full-back admits, though, that Vale have to dispense with being a Jekyll and Hyde outfit against the Scotsmen and, in their final game this season, against Caerphilly. Cull added: "We seem to do it against big sides like Swansea and Cardiff and we don't do it against teams further down the table that we should beat."

And he added that last Saturday's shocker against Neath, when the Steelmen played as though they were suffering from a bad case of rust, has helped focus minds.

"We tend to lose our consistency if we go away and think we are not going to win. I don't think I have ever gone on a pitch and seen Ebbw Vale play as badly as we did against Neath and I don't think you will see them doing that again."

The shock to the system of a 50-point thumping gave Vale a severe kick where it hurts before their midweek jaunt up to Scotland and a match with Edinburgh.

That finished with Vale again losing but, at least this time, showing some guts as they went down fighting 49-31 and conceded two hotly-disputed touchdowns which could have left the score far closer.

Cull added: "The boys were superb up in Edinburgh to pick themselves up after the shocking performance against Neath.

"Our motivation now against Glasgow is to prove a point to the fans again. We know we are a good team and, after all the hard work we have done this season, to have such a setback as we did at Neath is bad."
