GWENT steelworkers who survived last year's savage job cuts by Corus hope the company is not heading for more trouble after tomorrow.

President George Bush is expected to announce import tariffs to protect the ailing US steel industry - making it more costly for companies like Corus to sell steel in America. It would also result in steel that would normally be exported there being diverted to European markets, where Corus does most of its business. The world steel industry has been in crisis for a long time because of over-production.

Last year, Corus decided to shut the Ebbw Vale tinplate works with the eventual loss of more than 800 jobs and make over 1,300 redundant at Llanwern.

Tomorrow's US decision is crucial. It could mean an out-and-out worldwide trade war with repercussions for every producer, including Corus.
