A TERMINALLY ill Gwent man was allowed to return home for what doctors believe may be his last Christmas with his wife.

Michael Davies, 61, wanted to be at home with his wife Hilary, 53, at their home in Chartist Way, Blackwood.

Now Mrs Davies says she is determined her husband will not go back to hospital and instead live out the rest of his days at home with her.

Mrs Davies had been fighting to get her husband home after originally being told it was not possible because nursing care at home could not be provided over the Christmas period.

That meant he would have had to stay in Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital. Mr Davies was diagnosed with bone cancer three years ago and has been in hospital since November 21, the couple's wedding anniversary. Mrs Davies said: "He is a lot better and he is much more cheerful watching television at home where he belongs.

"Since coming back home on Christmas Eve, Michael has picked up and is enjoying himself.

"I feared that if he had stayed in hospital over Christmas he would have gone downhill fast."

After the couple had Christmas dinner together, Michael's brother, niece and nephew came round to visit in the evening.

Some close friends also visited the couple yesterday on Boxing Day. Mrs Davies said: "It is nice for Michael to see his family and friends away from a hospital environment. Now that he is home Michael is able to rest more and is very content as a result.

"I have tried to make this Christmas a bit more special in case it is my last with Michael but he is looking much better now."

Michael gave his wife a locket for Christmas that he had bought just before he was admitted to hospital.

Mrs Davies said: "Having Michael home was all I ever wanted for Christmas. I would like to thank everyone for making this wish come true. Both Michael and I are very grateful for what has been done."
