A MOTORCYCLIST suffered serious head injuries in a crash at a notorious accident blackspot near Caerwent.

Now police are appealing for witnesses after the accident at 6.50am on Saturday on the A48 between Crick and Trewen near the Caerwent junction.

A motorcyclist riding towards Newport was in collision with a car driving in the opposite direction.

The motorcyclist, 27, from Caldicot, who is not yet being named by police, is being treated at Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital for serious head injuries and a broken arm. He was today described as being in a stable condition.

The woman driving the car, also from the Caldicot area, suffered minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.

The road was closed for almost five hours while emergency services worked at the scene.

Brian Counsell, community councillor and ex-county councillor, said: "It's horrendous. There have been three accidents on that one spot in the last year.

"A boy of 18 was killed and a policeman has been seriously injured. It's an obvious blackspot and something can be done about it, but it will cost money.

"If there was a roundabout there then the traffic would slow right down." He added: "We have written to the police and and county hall. There are quite a few ways that junction could be improved but there's nothing in the offing."
