STOP Trescothick - that will be skipper Steve James' rallying cry to his Glamorgan troops as they bid to add to their solitary CrickInfo County Championship victory when they face Somerset tomorrow.

Their only win this season was by six wickets against Essex at Chelmsford on June 9. Now they need another on the road at Taunton as it is becoming more and more difficult for them to force a win at their Cardiff HQ.

They are currently in the bottom three and one of the favourites to be relegated back to Division Two.

But they have the boost of a fit again Jimmy Maher (after breaking a finger) to return as opening partner to skipper Steve James.

James told the Argus on Monday his club were now in a 'relegation dogfight" and needed to start winning quickly.

And he added today: "We have to start pulling our fingers out and producing the goods. Our recent performance against Leicestershire was not good enough either with bat or ball."

It will not be easy against current second-placed Division One side Somerset, particularly if England opener Marcus Trescothick continues his liking for the Glamorgan attack.

He has cracked five centuries against the Welsh county in total, including three in different competitions this season.

In the drawn championship match at Sophia Ghardens in April he cracked 147.

In the opening Benson and Hedges Cup clash a few days later he hit 113 in a six-wickets win.

And earlier this month at Taunton he demolished the Glamorgan attack with 121 in 83 balls which James described as probably the best one-day innings he had seen.

So if Glamorgan are to subdue him and Somerset over the next four days their bowlers will have to perform far beter than of late.

Between them they have managed just twenty bowling points this season, the lowest of the First Division counties.

Maher's return does not necessarily mean Newport's Ian Thomas losing out.

He remains in the squad with Glamorgan deciding on the morning of the opening day whenther to play two spinners or include Thomas as an extra batsman.

"The medical staff are happy for Maher to play," said James, "but we'll have to shield him a bit in the field. He won't be fielding in the slips."

The other Glamorgan casualty, Alex Wharf, is currently testing his fitness in a three-day second X1 game at Usk.

Glamorgan squad: Maher, Thomas (I), James, Maynard, Powell, Dale, Croft, Cosker, Thomas (D), Watkin, Parkin, Jones.
