FORMER Newport ace Ian Campbell, disappointed to be omitted from the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team to face the Americans next month, finished third in the WI Tucker Trophy over the Whitchurch and Newport courses.

And the 21-year-old, now based at Marlborough, finished second behind Whitchurch's Nigel Edwards in the Golynos Oak competition over the Newport course at Rogerstone. Campbell had two rounds of 71 at Whitchurch and rounds of 70 and 66 at Newport for a 72-hole total of 278, nine strokes behind runaway winner Edwards but just three adrift of second placed Kyron Sullivan.

Edwards, the 33-year-old Glamorgan champion who is in the Walker Cup side, is the outright leader of the Konica Welsh Order of Merit with one event remaining - the Welsh amateur championship at Royal Porthcawl next week.

Newport's former Gwent champion, Gareth Hughes, finished in the top ten in the Tucker Trophy with a total of 284, ahead of Pontypool's Vincent Collins and Stuart Westley from Llanwern.
