BARRY Town created Welsh football history when they became the first club from the Principality to win a Champions League round yesterday.

The League of Wales champions won 1-0 in the first qualifying round second leg in Azerbaijan against Shamkir.

Having won the first leg at Jenner Park 2-0 last week, Lee Phillips' 57th-minute goal beat Shamkir, who had a player sent off in the first half.

Barry will face a money-spinning clash with Portuguese giants Porto in the second qualifying round.

Porto, past winners of the European Cup who were beaten by Liverpool in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals last season, will be red hot favourites.

But Barry boss, Newport-born Peter Nicholas said: "Whatever happens they can't take this result away from us. We have created history.

"From the moment they had their player sent off, we had the game in our grasp. And when we scored in the second half it was just a case of running the clock down because it was all over, they were dead and buried."
