THE battle to get Cwmbran Town and the rest of the League of Wales clubs back on TV takes another turn today with a high-profile meeting in Cardiff.

BBC Wales controller Menna Richards was due to meet Assembly member Dafydd Wigley this morning to discuss the issue.

Earlier this week Cwmbran Town chairman John Colley blasted the corporation over the decision to axe Gol - the popular LoW highlights programme on S4C.

Soccer bosses believe there is too much emphasis on Welsh rugby, which has signed a £22.5 million deal with the BBC.

Mr Wigley told the Argus: "There is a great question about the balance of sports coverage. I think it's true that football is being left behind, but it's not entirely straight forward."

Yesterday morning members of the Assembly's culture committee briefly turned their attention to the new Football Forum being established under the chairmanship of Sports Council chairman Gareth Davies.

Mr Wigley urged culture minister Jenny Randerson to ensure that the forum had representatives from all parts of Wales, and all levels of football - not just the big clubs. The forum is due to meet for the first time in September, and terms of reference being drafted over the summer will be agreed at that first meeting.

Mr Wigley, a keen football follower who served as a director of Caernarfon Town, is also pushing to see grass roots football in Wales benefit from the £20m pumped into the English game by Sky.

"If we got just a twentieth share of that, that would make a world of difference to Welsh football. I hope some approach will be made to Sky," he said.
