A 96-YEAR-OLD woman and her son were pushed to the floor by con men who tricked their way into the house.

Police urged pensioners to be vigilant today after a separate incident where a woman in her 80s was targeted in her home by three men posing as policemen.

Winifred Found and her son David, 60, were pushed to the floor in the Newport house, before the men grabbed her handbag containing £100.

The men claimed they were from the council after walking into the house at 5pm on Tuesday.

Mr Found said: "They slammed me into the settee.

"When my mother tried to stop them, they pushed her harshly as well. She had a bad wound to her leg, and was very shaken up.

"It's terrible - how could they push an old lady to the floor?"

The men are both described as white with Irish accents. One had dark hair and a red coloured top, and the other had dark hair and a light coloured shirt.

Sergeant Dave Wakeham urged residents with elderly neighbours to check on them.

In a separate incident, an 87-year-old woman was targeted by three white conmen posing as police officers.

They got into the house in Rogerstone on Tuesday between 5pm and 5.30pm and stole £200.

The first man was 5ft 10in, 35 to 40, with dark brown hair, a local accent wearing a hat and blue tracksuit top and trousers with white stripes down the side. The second man was aged 30 to 40, 5ft 4in , with short dark brown hair, also with a local accent, wearing a dark coloured top and bottoms. The third man was 20 to 25, with short light brown hair wearing a white T-shirt.

PC Sophie Whiting, crime and disorder reduction officer at Bettws police: "This was a cruel offence against a vulnerable elderly victim."
