JASON Bowen has called for Newport County players and supporters to pull together to turn round the clubs fortunes.

The influential winger is going to be helping caretaker manager Glyn Jones while the club decides the way forward and he insists that now is the time for unity in the wake of John Cornforth's departure.

"The lads were gutted when we were told that John was leaving," Bowen admitted.

"Some of the squad were obviously not pleased and words were said, but we had a chat as a group and we all know that we have to stick together for the sake of the club.

"Unfortunately football is a tough business and results tell there own story but Glyn is in charge now and we all have to do our best to pull through.

"I will do what I can to help Glyn as will guys like Kwame Ampadu and others who have been over the course and know what football is all about.

"We knuckled down and had a good training session on Tuesday and we are trying to be focused and positive because the most important thing is what is best for the club.

"It is important now that we go out and get a win on Saturday against Weymouth."

He added: "There are a few guys who are non-contact and they know that they are playing for their futures and also for their reputations."

The club are going to take their time over making a decision but it may be that if the Jones/Bowen combination works out they will get the nod in the longer term.

Bowen is not looking too far into the future and is concentrating on Saturday instead and he hopes that the County fans will be out in numbers to back the team when they host Weymouth at the weekend. "I hope the fans get behind us because we need them more than ever," he said.

"It is a difficult time but we are all in it together and the players are determined to stay in the Nationwide South and not go through another relegation battle like last year.

"Weymouth will bring a lot of fans and, although I know it is the same old story for them, we need them to be there and backing us."

Bowen is still recovering from a knee injury and might make the squad.
