A BOY of 11 is fighting for his life in hospital today after an accident with a car near his school bus stop.

Neighbours say the boy, from Llandevaud near Magor, had been taken to the bus stop by his grandmother yesterday morning on his way to Chepstow Comprehensive School.

It is believed that at the last minute, he ran back to fetch something from the car - just as a silver Peugeot rounded a bend in the road.

After the collision, the schoolboy sustained what police described as life-threatening injuries. He was taken first to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, then transferred to the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where his condition today is described as critical.

The accident happened on the B4245 near the Wilcrick roundabout, and near the junction of the lane leading to Church Farm at about 8am yesterday.

A resident said the car's windscreen was smashed. It was the only vehicle involved.

Police closed a stretch of the road between Interbrew, Magor and the M4 where it crosses the B4245 for several hours while accident investigators collected evidence at the scene.

A recovery lorry from Crickhowell collected the Peugeot from the site at around 10.45am.
