CHIEF Supt Price expressed apprehension about the "lack of detail" in the merger plans as to whether one police authority would be set up for Wales.
But he said an amalgamation "should not be seen as a defeat". He said it "provides an opportunity to further develop partnerships to enhance the service provided throughout Wales" but also to "retain the locally-based style of policing that Gwent has been proud of".
He was "really proud so many people, including the Argus and MPs, have spoken in favour of retaining Gwent" but added concerns over the loss of local accountability were unfounded.
He said: "I am satisfied that if we retain the police divisions, which are designed around local authority areas, we will retain our accountability through the divisional commanders.
"I give my own personal commitment that I will air my concerns and views with the decision makers to ensure that the needs of our communities are not lost in the debate."
