NEWPORT officials are to investigate whether a road where a young driver recently died could be made safer.

Twenty-year-old Sam Bailey was fatally injured in a crash involving two cars near Rhiwderin on September 22.

At a full council meeting, Cllr Margaret Cornelious referred to the accident which happened on the bridge on the A468.

There have been a number of incidents at the spot.

"People usually end up on the railway line," Cllr Cornelious, who described it as a dangerous stretch of road.

She asked Cllr David Atwell, cabinet member for highways, if his department could look at the road and see if anything could be done, such as better signage, to make if safer.

Cllr Atwell said he would ensure the site was visited and an assessment was carried out.

Police closed the road from 10pm until 4am the next day following the accident and diverted cars through Rhiwderin village.

Tributes were paid to Mr Bailey who was a trainee chef at the Inn at The Elm Tree in Newport.

He was a keen footballer, playing for Graig-y-Rhacca FC where he lived with his family.

Family friend Ann Henderson described him as a "beacon" for other youngsters on the estate.

He leaves his father Rob, mum Clare and younger siblings Hollie, Ella and Harry.

Rob Bailey said he and his wife were immensely proud of him as a student, worker, brother, son and human being.
